Robert Steven's Story
Life,
Well I have been part of a Disaster Medical Assistance Team (DMAT) from 1999-2018 in Texas. I also work for EMS Network in Austin, TX which contracts EMS services for large populated events from 2004-2016. I worked for UT's Emergency Medical Support (EMS Network) during home games which went from 2004-2010. On the volunteer side I perform EMS for the Motorcycle Special Events Team (MSET Texas) from time to time which started in 2004-2013 and I also performed EMS for the Special Olympics of Texas which started & went from 2002-2009. On my spare time I like to scuba dive, ride my mountian bikes, dance to country music and search the internet. I still have not ever married for the right reasons (Love) Yes, I was married and divorced (2009-2014) to help out a friend though. I look at it this way if it is going to happen then it will hit me like a brick in the head. I sold my apartment/ commercial building and that is one tax bill I do not have to pay taxes on anymore after doing it for 20 years.
I always wanted to be an EMT/ Firefighter when I was growing up. My family and friends thought that I was going to stay a Draftsman which is what I was taught by Mr. Borchardt at Crockett. As it turns out, they were wrong. I still draft from time to time if I am asked to draw up something. You just don't see paper drafting performed anymore due to the invention of the CAD system. Paper drafting is becoming a lost art. I do a lot of EMS volunteer work for different groups.
Knowing I wanted to become part of the Texas EMS System started when I was a little boy (age 9) when I was stuck in Brackenridge Hospital as a pediatric patient. I saw EMS personnel come and go through the ER doors every day for months. I believe that is what set my fate to volunteer or work paid EMS (1985), volunteer Fire (1980), & volunt...Expand for more
eer Rescue SCUBA diver (1997).
I've have lived in Texas, Alabama, Texas, Alabama, Florida and Texas. I keep coming home to where I was born.
Being able to do things that the average person isn't crazy enough to even dream about while living with a seizure disorder my entire life means I beat the odds the doctors put against me so long ago as a little boy.
I've been EMS a total of 33 years in the State of Texas. I resigned from the Federal Government (DMAT) after serving 17 years starting with 9-11-2001.
No, I don't dress like I did 10 or 20 years ago. I grew a goatee and cut my mustache off. I also wear my hair all straight back which much younger women seem to let me know they like, I wonder how they would act if I told them I am old enough to be there father/ grandfather.
The weirdest jobs I ever had was either working in the concession stand at Longhorn Speedway off U.S.183 south for 2 or 3 seasons or driving a tracter with hay trailer in tow at a haunted hayride off IH35 in North Austin one Halloween.
I share my apartment with no one which I find alright most of the time.
In 10 years, I hope to be in as good of health as I am now. I'm going to get there by staying green and riding my mountain bike all over Austin since I went green buy selling my T-bird & Ford truck about 10 years ago. That is more money saved since I have no Tag, inspection, and insurance to buy each year.
My oldest friend is 70 now and was a medic like I still am myself. He gets me involved in a lot of the volunteer EMS that I do.
My first job was at Woolco when I was taking DECA classes at Crockett HS, where I got paid $2.60 an hour to work in the Garden Department. What I remember most about it is rounding the corner in the parking lot with no load on the forklift and riding on only 2 wheels, fun then, real foolish now.
